Running A6 without oil

Post by jeepsj »

Let's say someone had a total brain fart and ran a A6 compressor with NO oil in the system. Compressor completely dry. Probably ran it for 20 minutes while working on it. It was noisy from the time I started running it. Think it is fried?

A-6s have an oil sump and pump guilt in- do you think there was any oil in it? You can pull drain plug to see. As long as it still turns, there is hope- they typically have a thermal fuse that will blow and shut them off if body gets too warm--- did body get too hot to touch? They are pretty tough- I'd try it again- with oil.

This one has no drain plug on the body. When I removed it, there was zero oil that came out. The body did get hot. I can still spin it by hand and it feels ok. It is a little tight but this may be because it was a new/rebuilt compressor.

Searching around the web, it appears more to be a H6 or HD6 and not an A6. Still trying to find the differences between the H and HD.
