C171 Compressor

Post by JeremyB »

I've inherited an '87 Dodge D150. I flushed the system, replaced everything but the condenser, compressor, evaporator, and put in R-134a many moons ago. System worked so-so. High low side pressure and low high side pressure. Pretty sure the compressor needs to be replaced.

Sanden use to offer a direct drop in for the C171 compressor. https://www.autoacforum.com/messageview ... eadid=9345
I'm guessing none of those are left any more?

Are the C171s as bad as I've read about? I've got R12 and can convert back if it'd help out. Where should I buy a new one?

Site sponsor shows a new (aftermarket) C171 replacement in stock:

I would replace the condenser as well. The current replacement part is a nice Piccolo type unit.

Finally, the condenser airflow is very important. The fan clutch on that truck is probably pretty tired. Is this a V8 or a slant 6?

Those trucks cool well if you do everything right.

I am planning on replacing everything but the evaporator.
Didn't think about the fan clutch. I'll throw on a severe duty unit as well.

What oil should I put in? I've got some BVA100.

It's the 5.2L

Looks like you have it covered.

Ask Tim about the BVA in that compressor, I don't see why not but I don't know the specifics of that aftermarket supplier.

One more thing. How do I modify the charge due to swapping the tube/fin condenser with a piccolo? The piccolo has a lot less volume.
