1999 Saturn s series

Was looking at a 1999 Saturn S-series today. It was about 75 Degrees outside. With the windows open, fan high, recirculate on and the car idling the vent temp was about 50 degrees. Suction line to the compressor was cool but not cold and sweating. Did not get a chance to hook up gauges to get pressure readings. Is there anyway to get a decent charge without evacuating and recharging a car of this type which has a txv and variable displacement compressor? How would one check the performance of ac system with this design? Not saying this particular vehicle has a problem just curious if there is a good method for checking the charge?
Thank you
