Ford E350 Econoline Front AC not working withour Rear AC on

Good morning,
I have a 1998 Ford Econoline E350 extended. It's in very good shape. I have a problem regarding the front AC.
In order for it to cool, the back AC needs to be turned on.
The mechanic tells me I need a new compressor. Would anyone know if this sounds ok? I don't know much about cars.
I use it as my family car so it hasn't hauled heavy weight.

Need a few courses on vehicle mechanics for women...

Does the front system cool when the rear is turned on? Or is the rear system the only one that cools?

Sounds like you have had the vehicle for a while - did it work properly at one time?

This does not sound like a bad compressor yet. We need a little more info.
