Sourcing R12 240sx compressor

Post by PromiseRing »

Hey guys, trying to help a friend with his 92 Nissan 240sx hatch. Replaced the drier and vacuumed and charged by weight with r12, but compressor doesn’t compress. I’m having a problem sourcing any type of replacement compressor. I’ve checked rock auto as well as our ACkits.com link but to no avail.

We tried another used compressor that ‘felt’ like it had compression, but it also did not work. It will not build head pressure.

Am i screwed or are there any compressors that i can make work? Thanks in advance.

Did you call Tim at ACKits.com to discuss? He might be able to help you.

Why not convert the system to R-134a rather than keeping it R-12, which is extremely expensive and hard to find?

Even if a new replacement compressor comes filled with PAG oil, you can drain that oil and flush with R-12 type mineral oil by rotating the compressor drive plate a dozen times, then dumping that, then repeating, if you don't want to go to R134a.

I had to do the flush thing on the new compressor (bought through Tim at ACKits in 2014) for my 1988 Mazda truck, because that came filled with PAG oil, and I stayed R-12. Back then I was working, and could test the oil type at work in 2 minutes.

If someone calls, they will need to leave a message. I screen all calls anymore. The telemarketers and people just using our resources for free has gotten out of hand. Sad position to take, but better mentally than being pissed at the 4th caller that day asking how much oil should I put in the compressor they got off eBay. I'm 61 now, past the prime of chasing every sale. If the customer wants to spend a moment to leave a message, I usually respond via a text.

As for this issue, no one makes compressors anymore. If the core is good, it turns internally. We can have the compressor shop rebuild the customer's core. Same as buying the reman on our website, plus the freight to send it to our compressor shop.

Hey Tim, how can i get more information about sending a core in? We have roughly 3 or 4 of these compressors and are just hoping to have one good unit to install. The next best option is looking like using a 1998 Maxima compressor along with an S14 bracket. Trying to avoid a hodgepodge unless necessary.

Without also swapping the serpentine style condenser for a parallel flow, i would be sacrificing quite a bit of capacity and efficiency from what I’ve read.

I will flush the existing condenser and plan to replace the TXV and evaporator coil because i am tired of opening this system up

Internals of your core have to turn. Then we treat it as a Reman unit on our website. Additionally, you would need to send the core (s) to our compressor shop. They have the final answer on whether it is rebuildable and whether it would pass the post-build tests.

Your first step is to inspect the internals of the compressor. Not the pulley, but the front hub is turning the internal components.
