Evaporator side orientation mounting

Post by Pkimr »

Hi everyone,
Can an universal underdash evaporator be installed on its side rather then horizontal? Want to install in the center console
And the paralel condenser can be installed horizontal instead of upright?
Thank you

The condenser must be installed such that the larger diameter pipe is at the top and the smaller diameter pipe is at the bottom.
One of the other consultants will be by to answer about the evap

It's not a simple yes/no question. All evaporators are circuited differently, there are many different types.

Same answer for the condenser, it depends on how it is circuited, but usually the answer is yes, there are sometimes drawbacks.

It's like you are asking if your particular vehicle is good in the snow. Maybe, is it a Rubicon? Is it a Viper?

Thank you guys
The old style bulky condenser wasn't totally flat, was like 1" higher one side, new ones are thinner so will rise a little bit more

I was looking at some under dash evaporators pictures and the tubing goes horizontal side to side and like a Toyota evap has a main and travels down and up
If you place the under dash on its side it may be the same principal but not too sure if will work

Pkimr is this a theoretical question about all evaporators or are you asking about a particular one?

Those copper tube type will work in any orientation, best to keep the last run of tubing straight up or horizontal, it would work straight down, but in that case I'd run a higher superheat to make sure liquid isn't running out.

That second pictured type we call a plate-plate 2 tank. Run horizontal as shown, some tilt from horizontal in either axis is OK and happens due to g forces in corners, braking deceleration, acceleration
