1969 Chevelle SS 396- factory air specs
Can anyone tell me the Factory capacity of R10 refrigerant and oil for this car. I am getting mixed amounts from all over the web.
Another confusing issue on this is they usually list the refrigerant (by weight lbs-oz), correct? Now on the oils, the manufacturers list their product in oz or ml (by volume). There are lots of charts out there that list in oz, without specifying weight or volume.
For example, they will say you need 48 oz of refrigerant and 10 oz of oil ..!
I will ask about a later R-134a conversion in another post after I get a clear understanding of this.
Thanks

You probably mean R12, not R10.
"There are lots of charts out there that list in oz, without specifying weight or volume.

oz is a measure of weight, at least in the USA

Not a ton of difference between oz. in weight and fluid oz.
1 fluid oz. is like 29.6 ml
1 oz. weight, USA is 28.4 grams, or like 28.4 ml if water.

Typically, though, refrigerant is measured in ounces of weight while the oil is measured in fluid ounces.

Myself: I've always added refrigerant oil by volume as well, using a plastic graduated cylinder. It's graduated in ml, so about 25 to 30ml for an ounce of refrigerant oil.JohnHere wrote:Typically, though, refrigerant is measured in ounces of weight while the oil is measured in fluid ounces.
I do have an electronic balance/scale shed by my former employer (shed to save costs on re-calibrations for cGMP) ut have not used it for refrigerant oil.

Thanks,
You guys are a wealth of information and experience. Yes R10 was a typo, sorry. And yes fl.oz and oz.(weight) are almost the same and probably negligible when
adding oil to an AC system. I just want to get it clear in my head as to how the pros view it.
Back to the original question. Can anyone give the capacities for the 1969 Chevelle SS 396, both refrigerant and oil? preferably from a GM manual.
Thanks

The Haynes Manual for your Chevelle does not list capacities for R12 or its oil. I have it on competent authority (Team Chevelle web site) that a 1970 A-body with a C-60 compressor took 60 ounces of R12. What compressor are you running, C-60 or maybe an A-6? I cannot find a reference for a 1969 A-body refrigerant capacity.
It should be 10.5 ounces of "525 viscosity" oil going into an empty A-6 compressor. For both the R12 and oil amounts, they were quoted from the Factory Shop Manual for a 1970 A-Body on Team Chevelle.

Thanks Rick,
I believe it is an A-6. Same compressor as this guy's.

I decided to do a google search for the original compressor decal which is sold everywhere. It gives 4.00 lbs if refrigerant, but no oil spec.
Looking at similar model decals with 4.00 lbs refrigerant, they all give 10 oz of oil. So you are close.

Thanks for taking the time to look this up.

I found in my archives the information you requested: 3-3/4 pounds (60 ounces) of R-12 and 11.0 onces of 525 viscosity (mineral) oil.
