I came outside to mess with the car for a little bit because I was bored. I usually just leave the blower fan on low when I'm working on the AC. I took a look at the inlet and outlet tubes of the evaporator and I noticed the inlet got a got a pretty decent layer of white ice on it and then the compressor would kickoff. I then set the blower fan to high and the inlet tube would not freeze up as bad and the compressor would stay on. So it seems like some sort of air flow issue across the evaporator.
At this point I am thinking that I will just leave the AC the way it is for the rest of the season and pull the HVAC box to rebuild it this winter. When I held the throttle to about 2,000 RPM with the blower on high the high side would stay around 280 and then climb up to 300 and then come back down to 280. The low side would be between 10 and 20.
As I mentioned I'm probably going to just leave it as it is for now since I'm getting some cool air out of the vents unless you think there is something else I can do without pulling the box. Does it sound like it might be over or under charged?

Charge level is probably close. If you are going to leave it for winter, stop there.
Recovery of the R12 is your next step, so start planning for winter. Either find someone with equipment, or start looking for your own. A brand new, clean recovery tank is around $100 these days.

Ok, I'll just leave the charge level as is.
I called a few local auto repair shops and they all said they don't have equipment to recover R12. I am going to call some auto salvage places next. I have a recovery tank.

Here in Phoenix there are several shops who still do R-12.
