are you using a set of gauges for R134a by any chance? I was under the impression you were using a set of standard gauges.

They are r134a gauges though I'm not sure if they are standard. Here is a link with some pictures of the set I had. You can see in the pictures the hose ends.

What would you recommend I get? Something that is good but won't require breaking my piggy bank?

OK, forget everything I said about testing the hoses. BTW, that set appears to be made by TIFF and they are one of the better sets.
