1976 CADILLAC MIRAGE VIR AC SYSTEM

Post by Mirage »

I have a 1976 Cadillac Mirage. I am working on the ac system. I have rebuilt the VIR receiver, put on a new compressor, flushed all the lines, condenser and evaporater. I then evacuated the system (no leaks) and charged the system with 134a. As long as I have a jumper on the compressor tha ac works and is cold. Hoping the compressor not staying on was the relay, I replaced it with no luck. I don't know what to do next. Through my research, I think I've learned this system with the POA in the VIR, the compressor runs constantly when in AC mode. If I can't find a solution to this problem, I was thinking of putting a switch in the cabin to energize the compressor when I want AC. Anybody see any drawbacks to this solution? Any other suggestions to help me get the AC working would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an electrical problem. Sometimes there is more than one "gate" from the dash switch to the compressor.

I would recommend getting the OEM wiring diagrams from Mitchell. You can buy a one month subscription to the factory service manual.
