1977 Pontiac CCOT system rechage

Post by mrhand »

So to make a long story short, after rebuilding the system in my '77 Pontiac (new comp. accumulator, flushed cond and evap) there was a problem with the gauge set I used and a proper evacuation was never done. Didn't realize this until the system was almost fully recharged with expensive R12 and the evaporator kept freezing up and the compressor short cycling.

The moisture was obviously never removed before recharging.

Do I need to find a shop with the proper R12 all-in-one machine to recover and reuse the R12? My local shop tells me he "thinks" he can do it with his 134A machine and refill it with his R12 gauges whatever that all means. Sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Any advice is appreciated.

Find someone with an R12 recovery machine. You do not want to cross contaminate your refrigerant.
