Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
Ahhh! They positioned the clutch connection at 10 o clock instead of 2 o clock! There is no way the wire harness can reach it.

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
Most likely from the compressor prior to the rebuild. Some particles could have been sitting in the bottom evaporator tank even after the flush.JohnHere wrote:I wonder where the metal particles came from, though. Usually, that means something inside the compressor is disintegrating, as mentioned earlier.

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
Well the rebuilder received and inspected the compressor and found an extra o ring inside it. They removed it and said that otherwise the internals look OK. They said the extra o ring would have caused the symptoms I experienced. We'll see! At least they turned it around in one day and paid for ship...

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
The rebuilder fills it with 11 oz of ester oil. This is the full oil capacity of the system. Anyway, they are having me ship it back to them.

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
Well I opened up the system and pulled the orifice tube and found a couple pieces of rubber that looks like o ring material but which is not from the pipes/hoses. More concerning is that the screen was loaded with metal particles. Prior to the rebuild when I pulled the original 40 year old orifice t...

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
The inlet and outlet lines of the evaporator are cool, not cold as they normally should be. The hot/cold damper door is functioning properly.

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
I figured I would first look to see if the GM factory service manual for my car would provide any ideas. The trouble shooting chart says that if the charge were low then I would be getting a very very cold (possibly with frost) condition on the evaporator inlet after the orifice tube, and low suctio...

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
This system does use an orifice tube. It was replaced with a new one and in the proper direction. 3.75 lbs is what the system requires. I agree that the pressures should have a greater difference but is this because the system is still low on refrigerant? Right now I'm trusting that the compressor i...

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
Looks to me you're not pumping very much refrigerant. 60 & 110 @2000. Ambient is a littlew low but think if working correctly you would see a range closer to 35 & 200 @ 2000 RPM. Do you think I need to add more refrigerant? I just don't want to waste putting R12 $$$$$$ into it if it won't m...

Re: R12 system on 79 Trans Am
I'm using 20+ year old 12 oz cans of R12. I suppose it is possible that they really are no longer 12 oz due to small leakage at the top of the can. Do these pressures indicate that the charge is a little low?
