How tight should I make automobile O-ring A/C fittings? Is finger-tight enough?

I usually see automobile A/C compressors mounted with their high and low ports pointing up, at about 11 and 1 on the clock face. It would work better for me to mount the compressor so that the ports point sideways, about 2 and 4 on the clock face. Is this OK?
