Re: Custom AC project - general feedback and condenser selection

Condensers can have additional subcooling passes built in after the integrated receiver/drier. It creates a bit lower enthalpy at the condenser outlet, and is a better use of the condenser fins/tubes, all things considered. It's not a big effect, just a sensible improvement, with no real increase in...

Re: Loud compressor drive plate noise when first engages

Seems like you are talking about startup slugging. Hard to diagnose without hearing it first hand. Liquid refrigerant is sitting in your compressor because it's the coldest component in the system. Sounds like a spray paint can rattle for a few seconds while the pistons are smacking into liquid that...

Re: Copper hard pipe - any reasons not to use?

The suction line impacts performance the most of any pipe or hose. Pressure drop in this line raises the pressure and therefore temperature of the evaporator. Bigger hoses and larger radius bends help performance. The reality though is it has to fit. If you can use a large radius 3/4" tubing, l...

Re: Copper hard pipe - any reasons not to use?

Galvanic corrosion, copper is the cathode, aluminum is the anode, vehicles have all the bad conditions necessary for corrosion. Aluminum will be the metal that disappears, refrigerant will be set free.

Re: AC is AC.........Caterpillar backhoe

Compressor isn't turning, check clutch relay, clutch wires, clutch coil, coil ground. Maybe Cat disables the clutch relay permanently if you lose charge, and you need to pay the Cat dealer to turn it back on?

Re: Rotate compressor or move ports to side - generally possible? (with specifics for FS10 compressor)

You can't clock one half of an FS-10 90 degrees.

It's 5 bores arranged in a circle, pistons are double ended. (FIXED SWASPLATE - 10 pistons) Look at pentagon and rotate it 90 degrees, it's not the same.

Re: subcool "plateau" - DetroitAC

It does not matter where the receiver is located, anywhere between condenser out and TXV in is OK. Optimum charge is at the end of the subcool plateau for a properly designed system. If you will Frankenstein together a unique system, the end of the plateau is still the best first guess, but non-idea...

Re: VDC control unit

Scott, you can power and control the variable compressor control valve yourself. It's just an analog coil that produces a force on the control valve. It's a 12V coil, draws about 1 Amp. If you want to control, it uses a PWM signal at 400Hz. Suction pressure is inversely proportional to the duty cycl...

Re: subcool "plateau" - DetroitAC

Hi Andrew, I can explain whatever you need to know. Explaining it correctly is another matter :D I'm curious about where you live since you said 5500ft. I was born and grew up at 7250, normally aspirated engines that struggle were a fact of life. The plateau refers to a graph of all relevant paramet...
